Dutchess Man Arrested For Cutting The Throat Of Clerk During Armed Robbery, Police Say

A Hyde Park man is behind bars after allegedly cutting the throat of a gas station clerk and then stabbing him numerous times during an armed robbery of the business.

The incident took around 1:42 a.m., Saturday, at the Mobile gas station at 3480 North Road, said Town of Poughkeepsie Police Capt. Kevin Faber.

During the commission of the crime, Matthew Garcia, 26, brandished a knife and attacked the clerk before stealing money and fleeing from the business, Faber said.

The clerk, who was conscious and able to assist investigating officers, was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, Faber said.

During the investigation, information was developed leading to the arrested of Garcia who was taken into custody later the same day without incident.

Garcia was charged with attempted murder and robbery. He is being held in the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $75,000 cash/$150,000 bond. 

He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. 

The Town of Poughkeepsie Police was assisted by the City of Poughkeepsie Police, the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, the Town of Fishkill Police, the City of Kingston Police Department, New York State Police, and the Dutchess County District Attorney's Office.
